13 Digit Mobile numbers for new M2M customers

DoT (Department of Telecommunication) has ordered that all new M2M connections will have 13 – Digit mobile numbers from 1st July 2018.

M2M means Machine to Machine like swipe machine, electricity meters and cars. M2M are those numbers that are using SIMs in their device. Telecom companies like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and telecom industry body COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) have confirmed this news and said there will be no change in our mobile numbers at all.

Migration of existing 10 – Digit M2M numbers to 13 digits will start from October 2018 and will be done by December 2018. And all new M2M mobile connections will be allocated 13 – Digit numbers from 1st July 2018.

In case you have heard that your mobile number will convert into a 13 – digit number, so relax, that’s not true. It is only for M2M numbers.

What is M2M?

M2M is an abbreviation for machine-to-machine. It refers to wireless data communication between the machines. Telecom operators started SIM-based M2M services to enterprises in the form of smart electricity meters, vehicle tracking and fuel monitoring system, traffic management solution.

M2M SIM card is required to connect these devices to the internet, so these SIM cards can be used in regular mobiles as well. And telecom operators are same as your SIM card operator like Vodafone, Airtel, and Reliance Jio.

M2M technology is deploying in sectors like Health, Power, Utilities, Transport, Shipping and Logistics, these sectors have enormous potential to boost the economy.
